Getting Lost, Happily, in a Corn Maze in Modena, NY

Published on In late September at Hurd’s Family Farm, an invitation to “get lost” should be taken as that: a chance to make your way through four acres of dying stalks of summer corn, repurposed as a complex human- sized maze. A photo from above suggests one would only need a pen or a well-practiced lab rodent, but inside the narrow pathways, dwarfed by golden stalks gleaming in the fading light, you are hopelessly adrift in a sea of dried vegetation. As the flickering shadows blacken, the instinctual terror of being utterly lost quickens your breath. A moment later, the far-off shrieks of small muddy pumpkin-picking children jolt you to your senses. As your eyes adjust, you take a lungful of crisp air and heed to the revelation that veering a bit off course is sometimes better than knowing exactly where you stand.
